What do we learn about the pearl's symbolism from the reaction it evokes?
I think the pearl represents once wild or unimaginable dreams for Kino. But for other people like the doctor or priest, it represents greed and jealousy because they want the pearl too.
What human characteristics does the pearl bring out in these characters? Explain why you think the way that you do.
(Kino) The pearl brings out happiness and hope in Kino because the dream forms he saw in the pearl were things that would have been impossible before he had discovered the pearl.
(Juana) Juana doesn't dream about anything for herself but becomes very excited When Kino finds the pearl, though she tries to hide that feeling from others. I think this is because she is a humble person.
(Neighbors) The neighbors are very curious about Kino's find. They also knew that they had witnessed a great marvel, and whether it resulted in good or bad they would be able to tell others about it in the future when Kino would be known as either a powerful or foolish man, and they would be looked up to or respected because they were witnesses. I think this brings out pride.
(the doctor) The doctor became very greedy when he heard about Kino's pearl. I think this was because he was already gluttonous and self-centered to begin with. He also wanted people to think him smart when he tells how he was treating Coyotito's scorpion bite.
(the priest) The priest lied to Kino, telling him that his namesake did many great things, probably hoping Kino would be surprised and thanking the priest, maybe even giving away some money to the priest, since the priest needed some money for church repairs. I think the priest was looking for some easy money.
(the townspeople) All the people in the town got greedy too when they thought about how the pearl might affect them. Every man became Kino's enemy in a way because they wanted or needed the pearl too.
